COMMERCE (1080 KRLD) -Texas A&M Commerce has canceled classes through Wednesday as a result of the shooting Monday morning.
Police have identified the two women killed on the Texas A&M Commerce campus yesterday.
According to police, 19-year-old Deja Matts was a freshman and was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. She was from Garland.Deja's sister, Abbaney, was also killed. She was not a student at the school. Abbaney's two-year-old son was also shot. He was treated at a local hospital and released to family members.Police say the shooting appears to be a targeted, isolated event. They've still not identified the shooter.
A student called 911 to report the shooting. Other residents say they started hearing gunshots about 10:15 a.m. Monday.
"I honestly just thought it was part of the video game I was playing," one student said.
Others say this shooting comes as the campus is still recovering from the shooting at a party in Greenville in October. About 750 people had gathered for a party celebrating Texas A&M Commerce's homecoming. Two people were killed there, and no one has been charged.
"I think people were taking it very seriously from the very first email because the Greenville incident is still in our minds," another student said.
Monday afternoon, Texas A&M Commerce President Mark Rudin released a statement saying there was no ongoing threat, and the school's counseling center would add staff and keep expanded hours.
"I encourage you to take care of yourself, to utilize any university services that you may need, and to communicate with others that may need comfort during this time. As we unite in mourning [Monday's> event, I know the resolve our Lion family exhibits in times of crisis. Thus, I am confident we can unite in demonstrating that resolve together," he said.
Pride Rock reopened at 10:15 Monday night. Rudin says Texas A&M Commerce police would have increased patrols around campus, and residence halls would have additional staff.
Police have not identified a motive for the shooting.
