Ten Dallas city councilmembers are pushing for a cut in police overtime in an effort to fund more community programs.

The councilmembers say cutting $7 million would push the department to transfer more jobs to civilian roles and put more current officers on patrol.

The savings would go toward hiring those civilian police employees, affordable housing and other city programs.

Councilman David Blewitt said the move does not defund police, it just adjusts where the money is spent.

Earlier the council heard from the public who wanted further cuts.

The Dallas Police Association president has previously said cutting overtime would hurt public safety.
