DALLAS (KRLD) - Dallas Police will be stepping up enforcement of the city's traffic laws when it comes to those electric rental scooters that are popular in downtown, Uptown and Deep Ellum.
"You cannot ride those scooters on the sidewalk. You must follow all traffic laws," said Deputy Chief Thomas Castro. Police say people have been violating that rule, and that can put pedestrians and scooter riders in danger.
"We will never capture an accurate picture because not everybody reports it, but I would say that there are some injuries out there," Deputy Chief Castro said. "One of the goals is to stop those from occurring in the future."
Police are launching a social media campaign to remind people to keep their scooters off the sidewalk. They also have signs posted prominently around several neighborhoods were scooters are popular to advise riders about the rules of the road. People caught riding electric scooters on the sidewalk could be ticketed and face a fine of up to $200.
