New guidelines are in effect for how Dallas Police handle demonstrators.
Dallas Police chief Renee Hall says the new directive specifically bars police from using non-lethal force such as the teargas that was used during protests in the days after the demonstrations started.
Hall says officers can no longer use teargas, pepper balls or rubber bullets on non-violent protesters.
The teargas was used on a group of marchers, blocking traffic on the Margaret Hunt Hill bridge. One man says his eye was shot out by a rubber bullet.
Former Fort Worth Police Chief Jeff Halstead says it's a good call.
The new directives allow police to use non-lethal force for crimes such as burglary, vandalism or crimes against people however officers first need a supervisor's permission.
