DALLAS (KRLD) - Crews from the North Texas Tollway Authority have started preparing for winter. This week, they have been testing equipment and plowing piles of mulch to sharpen their skills.

"Mid-90s and we're thinking about snow and ice," says NTTA's Michael Rey. "We think about it, really, throughout the year. This is a great training session for our folks."

NTTA has 20 snow plows and a stockpile of brine and de-icer. Rey says a light winter last year means the tollway authority has plenty of supplies.

He says crews have been learning their routes, so drivers may have seen plows on the road this week.

"Our objective is always, in a heavy snow event, is to get one lane open, keep the roadways passable and then continuously improve on that," Rey says.

During a snow or ice storm, Rey says crews try to lay down brine ahead of time to keep the roads from freezing. He says NTTA and TxDOT work together to make sure each agency has enough manpower and supplies to ensure highways stay open.

Rey says they also exchange help to make sure the most critical areas are treated. He says elevated highways and interchanges pose the greatest challenge.

"If we swap supplies from one of our yards to them or vice versa in order to get things done quickly and efficiently, we're more than happy to do that," Rey says. "They're great partners. We're all in this together in an ice and snow event."
