Evictions Resume In Texas, Dallas County Orders Hearings Suspended

Evictions can resume Tuesday in Texas, but several of the state's largest counties, including Dallas County, have issued local orders to prevent them into June.

The Texas Supreme Court stopped all evictions in the state March 19. Last week, the court ordered both evictions and debt collections could resume Tuesday.

Eviction notices could be delivered starting Tuesday with court hearings allowed to begin next week.

In Dallas County, Judge Clay Jenkins issued an amended order at the beginning of April advising justices of the peace to suspend eviction hearings for 60 days. The order did not block landlords from seeking unpaid rent but did cap additional late fees at $15 a month.

Several other counties in Texas, including Bexar and Travis, have postponed any eviction hearings until June.

Tarrant County's order said it would comply with directives of the Texas Supreme Court but urged people who need short-term rental assistance to speak to a case manager:

Tenants across Texas who are living in housing with federally backed mortgages and are protected by the CARES Act cannot be notified of a potential eviction until July 25. The process then will include a 30 day notice to vacate.
