DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - A federal appeals court has come down on the side of public safety in a lawsuit filed by seven registered sex offenders from North Texas.
The way the registered sex offenders saw things, once their term was over, making them continue to register as a sex offender was, in some cases, a violation of their rights of due process. They argued it was an additional punishment.
But the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals said the registry is a matter of public safety, not more punishment.
The law can keep certain offenders on the registry for life.
