FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Fort Worth firefighters are using a new device to perform hands-free CPR compressions.
The department says the Mechanical CPR units, manufactured by Defibtech, are saving lives and reducing exposure risk during the pandemic.
And that's not the only new device Fort Worth firefighters are using to reduce exposure risk.
The department has 15 new AirTraq SP video laryngoscopy devices as well, used to secure airways in cardiac arrest patients without needing to insert an Endotracheal Tube. The department says the AirTraq is a safer alternative because it prevents paramedics from needing to get close to the faces of their patients.
Before the pandemic, officials with the department say teams of eight firefighters typically responded to cardiac arrest calls, but that number has been significantly reduced. That's where the new devices come into play.
Officials say the equipment will help deliver top notch care to patients ... even with less hands on deck.
"The Fort Worth Fire Department is committed to providing the highest level of care to the citizens of Fort Worth," Fire Chief James Davis said in a statement. "With the assistance of the Office of the Medical Director we are providing tools and training for our paramedics to do that."
