FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD)- A Fort Worth man is behind bars on charges that he shot and killed his girlfriend in Mansfield on Monday before stealing a car at gunpoint and fleeing the scene.

28-year-old Maurice Kelso Smith was arrested later at his apartment in Fort worth. The victim in the case, 26-year-old Darionne Burley, was pregnant with twins.

Police say Smith admitted to getting into an argument with Burley on Monday. Her body was found inside a car parked in front of a business on US 287 just south of Debbie Lane.

A woman had called police to report that a man had stolen her Jeep at gunpoint and left his own car behind. Investigators used vehicle registration records to identify Smith and placed his apartment under surveillance.

He was arrested late Monday and originally charged with aggravated robbery. He was also held for violating his parole on a previous case of burglary of a habitation.

Police obtained warrants to search Smith's car and his apartment. They found a shell casing in the car that matched a gun recovered from Smith's apartment. They also found bloody clothes at Smith's apartment. The gun had recently been purchased at a gun show by a friend of Smith's, who police say then sold the weapon to him.

Smith has been charged with capital murder of multiple persons. Relatives tell police he and Burley had been involved in an on-again, off-again relationship since high school. Burley's twin boys were due in October.
