Severe thunderstorms that pushed through North Texas Tuesday morning, breaking a 73 year old record for rainfall on June 23.
On June 23, 1947, the area received .84 inches of rain. Through 10 a.m. Tuesday, 2.49 inches had fallen at DFW Airport.
Near the airport, high water shut down traffic on westbound Highway 183 for about two hours Tuesday morning. Irving police closed the highway, holding traffic. Some people pulled across the grass onto the frontage road.
Just before 10 a.m., police opened the left shoulder. Some drivers waited along the shoulder for the water level to drop more, saying they drive lower-profile cars and were afraid of damage.
"People are having a hard time getting through. Police are doing what they need to do by keeping it slow and steady," one man said while he waited on the shoulder. "There are some cars that should be going through that at all."
"I saw a lot of people pulled over before they went through," another man said. "They were just seeing what the other cars were doing before they actually drove through the water."
