DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The HEB grocery store chain is among a number of stores named in a federal lawsuit accused of price-gouging on eggs.
A federal lawsuit filed in Austin by a group of shoppers accuse grocery stores, farms and wholesalers of nearly tripling the price of eggs after Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster on March 13 from the coronavirus.
The suit names San Antonio-based HEB as well as other Texas based grocers, Brookshires and Lowes Markets.
Costco, Albertsons, Walmart and Kroger were also named in the lawsuit.
The plaintiffs couldn't determine for sure who was price-gouging, so they sued practically everyone.
In a statement HEB said the allegations were without merit, saying they absorbed the increased cost of eggs and lost money rather than passing the increased price on to consumers.
Brookshires said it hadn't seen the suit but they too tried to not pass higher egg costs on to shoppers.
