McKinney (1080 KRLD) - Things got heated last night during McKinney's City Council meeting -- the first since council member La'Shadion Shemwell declared a "black state of emergency" in Texas.
People took to the floor to voice their opinions ... and they had a lot to say.
"I do no agree that there's a black state of emergency," Mckinney resident Michael Jones said during the meeting. "And I want to make it clear for the people here today or who are watching from home: One person does not speak for the entire black community ... here in Mckinney, or anywhere else."
While some members of the community agree wholeheartedly with Shemwell, others are planning to oust him from office. It's a move Mayor George Fuller says he would support. In order to get a recall on the ballot, the petition to recall Shemwell would need a minimum of 2,100 valid signatures.
Shemwell's mother Rolanda Mocharia took to the floor to defend her son.
"This is a good man," Mocharia said. "I know it because I raised him. I am hardened. I am hurt because I love the city of McKinney and I love him."
Last night's meeting was also the first since the recent arrest of a black teenager resulting in the 14-year-old's family claiming police brutality. McKinney police supplied body cam video to show the circumstances of that arrest.
