FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Health officials say with so much going on in the world, it’s easier than ever to accidentally leave your child in a hot car.

So far this summer, MedStar crews have responded to four different incidents where a kid was left in a hot car. That’s more than this time last year ... and MedStar’s Matt Zavadsky says the trend needs to stop.

"Texas leads the country in the number of hot car deaths," Zavadsky says. "We're trying to do everything that we can here in North Texas to try and prevent that from happening."

With the pandemic forcing many people to adapt to new routines, Zavadsky says it’s easier than you think to get distracted and accidentally leave your child in the car. And in the summer heat, it takes only minutes for a car to reach dangerous temperatures.

"Consider all the things that parents are going through right now," Zavadsky says. "Especially new parents-- their world has been turned upside down."

It’s imperative to always check the back seat before you exit the car, Zavadsky says, and make sure the your car is locked when you get out so the kids don’t crawl inside without you knowing.
