MESQUITE (1080 KRLD) - The City of Mesquite is encouraging its residents to visit businesses and restaurants in their community as more of those establishments reopen.

The "Shop Mesquite" campaign is being launched to coincide with Governor Abbott's latest orders allowing restaurants to increase their capacity on May 22nd and other businesses to reopen.

"With the crisis, we noticed a lot of businesses are starting to hurt," said Mesquite City Manager Cliff Keheley. "We wanted to make sure we had a program or a campaign that really put some emphasis on the reason to shop in Mesquite, especially for our citizens."

In addition to helping local businesses recover from the damaged caused by COVID-19, city officials also hope the campaign will help the city's budget.

"About 25 percent of our revenues are from our sales tax collections. With the large amount of retail that we have in Mesquite, most of that is retail-based sales tax," said Keheley. "It's essential for the services that we provide to our citizens to have adequate funds through our sales tax."

The city has already released a video called "Home Today, Together Tomorrow" and plans to continue the campaign long-term.

"We're trying to reach out to our residents just on every platform we can to make sure they understand the importance of a strong and vibrant economy in our community," Keheley said, "and how that impacts our revenues and the services that we provide."
