DALLAS (KRLD) - An amendment from Republican Dan Crenshaw and Democrat Lizzie Fletcher, both of Houston, frees up $45 million dollars for people who applied for Small Business Administration loans after the August of 2017 storm slammed Southeast Texas.
The amendment was included as a part of the disaster supplemental legislation.
Fletcher says those people were told that loan would not disqualify them from other disaster aid. "Unfortunately they were in fact disqualified from other forms of federal aid because they had taken out an SBA loan. Had they taken out a loan from a friend or a bank they would not have been in this situation. They would still be eligible for the federal aid."
She says denying people aid is inconsistent with the intent of Congress to punish people who are seeking help from agencies in their time of need.
Harvey landed on the Texas Gulf Coast in August of 2017. It took 68 lives, dropped more than 60 inches of rain and it cost nearly 125 billion dollars in damage.
