DALLAS (KRLD) - The rare COVID-19 related Multi-Symptom Inflammatory Syndrome has made its way to North Texas.
Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth has confirmed four cases of the syndrome in children ranging in age from 6 to 14. Three have recovered and the fourth is still in intensive care. The disease presents itself with symptoms similar to, what many parents know as, Kawasaki disease.
"We're seeing things like fevers, abdominal pain, even severe abdominal pain and outward expression of inflammation," said Doctor Nicolas Rister, an infectious disease specialist. "So with that you're going to see diffuse red rashes. You're going to see conjunctivitis. Pain general aches. I feel very terrible. Some patients say it feels like everything hurts."
The syndrome is similar to Kawasaki disease, which attacks the blood vessels. But the Inflammatory Syndrome can also attack vital organs.
"The biggest concern we have right now, and this especially with kids, is largely stemming from inflammation from around the heart. And this is something we see in Kawasaki disease as well. And not just around the heart. The coronaries and the aorta" said Rister.
Parents whose children have the symptoms, and have been around the COVID virus, should call their pediatrician or family doctor.
