FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - Several institutions in Fort Worth are teaming up to offer a new residency program for new physicians.
The partnership between Baylor Scott and White All Saints Medical Center, TCU and the University of North Texas Health Science School of Medicine could eventually train up to 150 new doctors each year.
"Every student that graduates with a medical degree from a medical school competes for residency programs," said Michael Sanborn, president of Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center - Fort Worth. "Across the country, there are not enough residency programs to go around - so a lot of new graduate physicians have to leave the area. This will add a bunch of opportunities for them to do training here in the Metroplex and ultimately stay and practice here in the Metroplex after they're done with that training."
The new residency program will begin accepting doctors in the summer of 2021. Sanborn predicts that doctors who train in north Texas are more likely to stay in the area to start their careers.
“There's a lot of people moving in to DFW -and a lot of opportunity and a lot of need for physicians of all different types, especially in the primary care area," he said, "We've got a lot of ground that we need to gain here and hopefully our program can help us gain some of that ground."
