NORTH TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL PLAYOFF PREVIEW - BI-DISTRICT

It's playoff time.  This weekend, 640 11-man high school teams across Texas will begin their pursuit of the ultimate prize - a state football championship.  Forty-seven of them remain undefeated this season.  And after play is complete in the bi-district round, half the remaining teams will be sent home, while the other half will survive and advance to the next elimination game.  In the end, only ten teams statewide will win six consecutive postseason games and take the big trophy home.

As the playoffs begin, we focus on two key factors - recent performance (winning or losing streaks) and scoring differential.  Watch for teams that averaged more than 45 points per game and/or allowed fewer than 20 per game during the regular season.  Those schools likely are more primed for playoff success.  Look out for teams that have been outscored this season.  Those squads likely face a much more precarious road in the playoffs.

There's nothing like the Texas High School Football Playoffs.  These are the bi-district matchups and brackets involving North Texas schools:

CLASS 6ADivision IRegion I

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  In the top half, unbeaten Southlake Carroll is the favorite to advance to the state quarterfinals.  The Dragons have yet to lose a regular-season game under second-year head coach Riley Dodge.  Considering the issues DeSoto encountered late in the season, Dallas Skyline could be a major challenge for the Eagles.  Midland Lee was the hottest big school team in West Texas for most of the season, but they stumbled last weekend against Odessa Permian.  Euless Trinity-Arlington Lamar is an outstanding first-round matchup.  The winner likely will face Midland Lee in Round Two.  In the bottom half of this bracket, No. 1 Duncanville is a huge favorite to roll through the first three rounds, but watch out for Arlington Martin.  Let's go with Southlake Carroll vs. Duncanville in the regional final.

El Paso Montwood (7-3) vs Midland Lee (9-1), 4 p.m. Thursday at Midland’s Grande Communications Stadium

Region II

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  Allen is the lone unbeaten among the 16 teams in this mini-tournament, and the Eagles are the favorite to return to the state semifinals for the 8th consecutive year.  However, they'll need to win four games to get there.  If Allen gets by Sachse this weekend, they could face explosive Rockwall in the area round.  The bottom half of this bracket is a bit more open, as it includes dangerous teams like Prosper, Mesquite, Spring and Round Rock Cedar Ridge, in addition to perennial power The Woodlands.  I'll take a shot and say it'll be Allen vs. Spring in the regional final.

Allen (10-0) vs Sachse (8-2), 7 p.m. Friday at Allen’s Eagle Stadium

Class 6ADivision IIRegion I

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  There are no unbeatens in this group, and it should be fascinating to see how it all plays out in Region One of 6AD2.  El Paso Americas is an explosive team with a salty defense, but the schools from way out west tend to fade as the calendar turns from November to December.  Arlington High is an excellent, battle-tested squad that could make a deep playoff run.  A Denton Guyer-Cedar Hill matchup is possible in round two, and the winner of that potential game easily could emerge as a quarterfinal participant.  On the bottom half, my gut says go with Flower Mound Marcus, but they would have to wade through some very good three-loss teams.  Watch out for Arlington Bowie, Weatherford and Amarillo Tascosa.  Gonna take a flyer here and take Denton Guyer-Flower Mound Marcus in the quarterfinals.

El Paso Americas (9-1) vs Wolfforth Frenship (7-3), Friday 7 p.m. at El Paso’s Socorro ISD Student Activity Center

Region II

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  This group includes defending 6A Division Two state champ Longview, which is a favorite to go back-to-back.  And while the Lobos might actually be better than the team that won it all last season, 6AD2 features a tougher field this year.  The potential blockbuster would be a third-round matchup between Longview and fellow unbeaten Austin Vandegrift.  If those two meet, the survivor would be favored to advance to the semifinals.  The bottom half of the bracket is more cluttered, which gives the McKinney-Garland Naaman Forest winner a shot to make a run.  Gonna cast my lot with Longview and say they will face Tomball Memorial in the regional final.

Dallas Jesuit (6-4) vs Garland Lakeview Centennial (6-4), 7 p.m. at Dallas’ Haggar Stadium

CLASS 5ADivision IRegion I

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  I think it's fair to say the bottom half of this one is a bit more impressive, as it includes unbeaten Denton Ryan and one-loss teams Azle and Abilene Cooper.  Azle has won nine straight, but don't forget they dropped the opener to Grapevine - this week's opponent - way back in late August.  A potential Azle-Abilene Cooper matchup would be highly entertaining.  And no matter how it shakes out, everybody else has to get through Denton Ryan, which is looking to advance to the state semifinals for the fourth straight year.  The potential fourth-round opponents for the Ryan Raiders include Amarillo, Crowley and district foe Colleyville Heritage.  In the end, I foresee a Denton Ryan-Crowley showdown in the quarterfinals.

El Paso Eastlake (6-4) vs Lubbock Monterey (5-5), 1 p.m. Saturday at El Paso’s Socorro ISD Student Activity Center

Region II

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  Only one of these 16 teams will survive to compete in the state semifinals, and they will have earned it.  The bracket includes three-time defending 5A Division One state champ Highland Park, top-ranked Frisco Lone Star (which beat Highland Park in the regular season), dangerous Lancaster, recent state champ College Station, explosive McKinney North and East Texas power Lufkin.  A third-round rematch between Lone Star and Highland Park is possible, as is a round two meeting between McKinney North and Lancaster, which has lost only to 6A Duncanville and Highland Park.  I think it will be Lancaster-Lufkin in one regional semifinal, with Highland Park and Frisco Lone Star squaring off in the other.  It's an extremely tough call, but let's go with Frisco Lone Star and Lufkin in the state quarterfinal.

Frisco Lone Star (10-0) vs Mansfield Legacy (4-6), 7:30 p.m. Friday at Frisco’s Ford Center

Class 5ADivision IIRegion I

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  I consider this the "potluck" bracket.  From my view, there is no clear-cut favorite, and anything could happen.  The 16 teams in this group include one unbeaten (El Paso Parkland), four 3-7 teams and three more that have five wins this season.  It would not surprise me one bit to see 6-4 Justin Northwest maintain their roll and go all the way to the state semis.  Their biggest hurdle will be Lubbock-Cooper.  In the top half, conventional wisdom gives an edge to 10-0 EP Parkland, but the track record of the El Paso schools says otherwise.  Give me four-loss Wichita Falls Rider and Lubbock-Cooper in the regional final.

El Paso Parkland (10-0) vs El Paso Bowie (5-4), 8 p.m. Friday at El Paso’s Matador Stadium

Region II

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  As Aledo looks to break through and make Texas history with its ninth state title, there are several nine-win teams that are out to make sure it doesn't happen for the Bearcats.  I would love to see Red Oak take its shot at Aledo in round three, although the Hawks likely will face a tough matchup with the Denton Braswell-Corsicana winner in the area round, so there is plenty of work to be done for Red Oak.  In the bottom half, Frisco, South Oak Cliff, Ennis and Burleson Centennial are all formidable.  Any of the four teams could advance to the state quarterfinal.  After much consternation, I will anticipate an Aledo-Ennis regional final.

Aledo (9-1) vs Dallas Kimball (7-3), 7:30 p.m. Friday at Aledo’s Bearcat Stadium

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  One year ago, Decatur got red-hot at the perfect time.  Despite a losing record in the regular season, the Eagles caught fire and advanced to the state semifinals.  Decatur ain't sneaking up on anybody this time.  The potential matchup with the most shimmer in this bracket is Dumas-Decatur.  Both are 10-0 and they could meet in the third round.  In the top half, the regional semifinals could also feature Springtown-Andrews.  After a very entertaining three weeks in 4AD1, I'll say we get to enjoy Dumas-Andrews in an all-West Texas affair for a spot in the semifinals.

Region II

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  This group includes top-ranked Argyle, which is the lone unbeaten in the bunch.  The Eagles have been crushing the opposition all season, and they have to be the favorite to advance to the state semis.  Who are the teams that could bring Argyle's dream to a halt?  Let's start with Waco La Vega, although they were vanquished by the Eagles in a 49-35 slugfest on Sept. 6.  After a tough start against brutal non-district competition, Kennedale is playing as well as anyone.  The winner of a potential round two meeting between Alvarado and Brownwood also has to be counted among the contenders.  Alvarado is my dark horse pick in this bracket.  Give me an Argyle-Waco La Vega rematch in the quarterfinals.

Region III

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  For district foes to meet for a second time in a single season, each has to advance to the state quarterfinals.  That could be the case here with Carthage and Henderson.  However, I have to go with under-the-radar (and unbeaten) Huffman-Hargrave to advance to a fourth-round matchup with the Carthage Bulldogs.

Class 4ADivision IIRegion I

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  Undefeateds Midland Greenwood and Lubbock Estacado would appear to be the class of this group.  The chances are good they'll meet in round three.  Both feature rock-solid defenses, but Greenwood is a bit more explosive on offense.  Let's give them the nod for one quarterfinal berth.  On the other end of the bracket, you have 9-1 Iowa Park and then everybody else has six wins or fewer.  Let's call it Midland Greenwood and Iowa Park in the regional final.

Region II

BRACKET ANALYSIS:  Two of the teams in this bracket are unbeaten (Sunnyvale and Waco Connally), and that doesn't even include the No. 1 4AD2 team in the state, Texarkana Pleasant Grove.  A third-round matchup between Sunnyvale and Texarkana Pleasant Grove is a pretty good bet in round three.  Waco Connally is favored to emerge from the bottom half, but watch out for Gilmer.  Both Pleasant Grove and Waco Connally have been ranked No. 1 this season.  They'll meet in the quarterfinals to settle things on the field.
