DALLAS (KRLD) - Tropical Storm Imelda’s impact could mean E.coli or other contaminants in more than 126,000 household wells in Texas. That’s the prediction of the National Groundwater Association.
The Association’s Ben Frech says the flooding of household well systems can lead to permanent damage and the possibility of dangerous water contamination.
Exposure to E. coli, coliform, and other pathogenic microbes from human and animal fecal matter have occurred following major flooding events.
According to Frech, “what we see and what we’re worried about usually with these flooding situations is contaminated water seeping into wells through cracked valves or head-stems on wells and therefore contaminating the drinking water.”
Frech added that it would be wise for well owners in the 13 Texas counties affected by Tropical Storm Imelda to test their system.
“If people suspect that their well could be contaminated, we do encourage them to get their water tested. There’s a lot of information about this on WellOwner.org.”
Frech also suggests contacting your local county board of health.
