DALLAS (KRLD) - The Red Cross is partnering with the NFL to offer a trip to Super Bowl LIV in Miami to someone who donates blood between now and January 19th. This is the first time the two have worked together on a blood drive.
"It's just a great way to say, 'Thank you.' It's a great way to say, 'We appreciate you, blood donors. We know you're giving us an hour out of your time,'" says the Red Cross' Jan Hale.
The Red Cross says donations typically drop at the holidays. The organization says volunteers host an average of 500 fewer blood drives during the weeks of Christmas and New Year's.
Hale says the supply of Type O blood has dropped below a three day supply. She says many regular donors many not be available at the holidays, and many organizations stop holding blood drives.
"We understand why. A lot of people are on vacation, and they're not working, which is where a lot of our blood drives happen," Hale says. "But when you get into difficult situations like we are after the holidays, that O positive blood type is one of the first ones that has difficulty in the supply. That's what we're seeing right now."
Anyone who donates to the Red Cross over the next two weeks will be entered to win two tickets to the Super Bowl. Airfare to Miami, tickets to the Super Bowl Experience at the Miami Beach Convention Center, hotel accommodations and a $500 gift card will be included for the winner.
