
Cornyn went on to say that he understood why Abbott came to the conclusion he did, “because of the impact on education costs, on healthcare, on law enforcement has been pretty dramatic and unfortunately, the Federal Government has failed to provide the support that is needed.”
Cornyn gave various reasons why he wished to meet with Abbott on the issue at first saying that he may have a private conversation with Abbott because “legal immigration is a good thing.”
Later in the call when asked what he wanted to talk to Governor Abbott about Cornyn said, “Greg Abbott is my friend and I hold him in high regard and I’d just like to have a private conversation to get more detail about his thought process…but again that’s his prerogative and not mine.”
Governor Abbott has faced sharp criticism for his decision to opt Texas out of the program from the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops.
The group released a statement saying “While the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops respects the governor, this decision is simply misguided…It denies people who are fleeing persecution, including religious persecution, from being able to bring their gifts and talents to our state and contribute to the general common good of all Texans.”
