DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - Dallas Fire Rescue says ten people showed symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning after a cookout inside a church in the Cedar Crest neighborhood.

Firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to a 911 call for an unconscious person at Calvary Philadelphia Missionary Baptist Church on Ann Arbor Avenue just before 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The first crews to arrive "quickly realized the situation was a lot more serious than originally indicated." They say a total of ten people ranging in age from seven to 58 were reporting lethargy, dizziness, headaches and nausea.

Dallas Fire Rescue says the group had been using a propane grill inside the church and had shut doors and windows. The fire department says that caused "enough of a buildup of the deadly, colorless, odorless gas that it resulted in adverse health effects for a lot of the people inside."

The first crews to arrive called for an EMS supervisor and seven ambulances. Ten people were taken to four hospitals and are now recovering.

Dallas Fire Rescue says the church may not have had a carbon monoxide detector. The fire department says it "does encourage them to be installed in a central location, on every level of the home and in other locations where required by applicable laws, codes or standards."
