ALLEN (1080 KRLD) - A group of students at Allen High School are working overtime to connect with their peers during the coronavirus pandemic.
The group just launched Soaring with the Eagles, a collaborative video series that brings online entertainment to students every week. It's completely student produced-- and brings together a variety of departments to teach about programs from fine arts to football.
"It's 100% student led and student pushed out," said Jason Johnston, Principal of Allen High School. "They're producing weekly video segments that talk about the importance of staying both physically and mentally healthy."
Soaring with the Eagles already has five published videos on the school's YouTube channel, each featuring student athletes giving exercise tips for staying healthy at home. Eighteen videos are in the works and dozens more have been requested-- those are planned to delve into subjects like culinary arts and theater.
The videos are geared toward young students in the Allen ISD, but anyone can access them.
Adam Bennett is one of the seniors spearheading the project-- he says it's more work than anyone anticipated. Still, the group is hoping to expand the project and their goal is to produce enough videos to last through the end of the school year.
"It's super fun," Bennett said. "And it's challenging."
Bennett says the idea is to help others and to establish a sense of normalcy during tumultuous times. Johnston says the project is doing just that, and he couldn't be happier with the way the students are coming together.
