DALLAS (1080 KRLD) - The weather system sitting just off the upper Gulf Coast of Texas now has a name.
The National Hurricane Center announced Tuesday afternoon that Tropical Storm Imelda had formed in the northern Gulf of Mexico.
The center of the storm was located about 50 miles southwest of Galveston. As of noon CDT, it was moving to the north at 7 mph. Maximum sustained winds were at 40 mph.
A tropical storm warning is in effect from Sargent to Port Bolivar, including Galveston Island. A flash flood watch is posted for the Houston-Galveston area, with some locations expected to pick up more than six inches of rain through Thursday.
