DALLAS (KRLD) - Texas A&M Commerce will host a vigil Monday afternoon for the victims of the shooting at a private party this weekend. Two people were killed, seven others were shot and hospitalized, and seven more were injured in the panic that followed.
The shooting occurred at the "Party Venue," west of Greenville, Saturday night. Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks says about 750 people were attending the party, but no one has been willing to give a description of the shooter.
"It appalls me that with as many folks who were there have not been able to give us a better description of this shooter," Meeks says. "I just know we haven't been able to get much cooperation."
Meeks says some people may be afraid of retaliation if they work with investigators. Governor Greg Abbott says the Department of Public Safety and Texas Rangers are helping in the investigation.
The two who were killed have been identified as Kevin Berry Jr. and Byron Craven, both 23. Friends and family attended a vigil for Berry in Pleasant Grove Sunday evening.
"Kevin wasn't a man who was headed down the wrong path," one of Berry's cousins, Reverend Jayzeno, said, adding that he would forgive the shooter if he turned himself in. "My cousin was an awesome father, a hard-working man, and you took away somebody who meant something to me and my family."
At the vigil Sunday evening, someone started shooting outside. Several cars were hit, but no one was hurt. Monday morning, Dallas police said they were talking to two people who might have been involved.
Texas A&M Commerce will host a vigil of its own Monday afternoon. The school says four students were treated and released from the hospital.
The vigil will take place at the amphitheater at 4 p.m.
Classes will continue as scheduled Monday, but absences will be excused.
"As members of the Lion Family, we value the importance of the healing process," Texas A&M Commerce President Mark Rudin wrote in a letter posted online.
Rudin says additional counselors will be available, and anyone who needs help can call (903) 886-5145.
