WEATHERFORD (1080 KRLD) - Parker County Emergency Management says the opening of a floodgate at Possum Kingdom Lake could lead to flooding downstream.

The Brazos River Authority opened a third floodgate at 8:00 p.m. Thursday because of high water upstream.

The Brazos River Authority last opened the third floodgate in 2016, causing damage to homes in the Horseshoe Bend area. In 2016, the Brazos River rose to 25.6 feet. The Brazos River Authority expects the river to crest between 21 and 24 feet Saturday afternoon.

Parker County Judge Pat Deen declared a local disaster Thursday evening to put resources on standby.

"Parker County Emergency Management is advising all residents who live in flood prone areas along the river to prepare to move to higher ground. Flood waters are expected to start spilling out of the banks of the river tomorrow morning, Friday, June 7," he wrote in a Facebook post.

The Brazos River Authority is telling people not to walk or play along the banks of the river, saying the rain could lead to bank collapses and cause people to fall into swift water.

TxDOT has closed Highway 16 where it crosses the river beneath a dam.

The Brazos River Authority says Highway 16 will reopen after the floodgate is closed and water recedes.
