CLEBURNE (1080 KRLD) - Investigators say 57-year-old Freddie Mack met the gruesome fate, after some of his bones were found and tested.

Mack was described by sheriffs as a recluse who kept to himself, with 18 dogs of various breeds.

"Mr. Mack contacted his family a few times a month, and they'd help him with shopping and other chores," says Johnson County sheriff's deputy Aaron Pitts. "After not receiving a call from him, the family became concerned and drove out to his property. He wasn't there."

Investigators had to use a drone to investigate the property, and found that Mack likely hadn't wandered away. In mid-May, some small bones were found on the property, which were believed to be human.

"We were advised to get those tested, and they were sent to the University of North Texas forensics," says Pitts. "Yesterday we got the confirmation they were human, and with familial DNA, they were confirmed to be the bones of Freddie Mack."

Investigators say they may never know exactly what happened to Mack.

"He did suffer a traumatic head injury in 2017, and was known to have seizures," says Pitts. "It's hard to know anything with the lack of evidence. All we know is that he was consumed by his animals."

Investigators had worked to care for the dogs during their search, but say many of them were aggressive. Two of those 18 dogs were killed by the others. Of the remaining dogs, 13 have been put down, and three were sent to a shelter.
