FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - The Fort Worth Fire Department says paint fumes led to an explosion at an apartment complex along Bryant Irvin, south of I-20.

The fire department was called to the explosion at Mirador Apartments just before 5:00 am Tuesday.

Officials say a man was painting inside his apartment when something caused fumes to ignite. Investigators are still looking for the source of the ignition, but the man inside was taken to the hospital with burns to his torso.

"This does appear to be an isolated incident secondary to those paint fumes," says the fire department's Mike Drivdahl.

Drivdahl says no natural gas is supplied to the building.

"We're working on the ignition source, but there's no threat of natural gas," he says.

The explosion blew out a window in the apartment. Drivdahl says the blast did not lead to a large fire.

Sprinklers in the apartment below did turn on after the explosion, leading to water damage there.

"We can describe this as a 'flash explosion,'" Drivdahl says. "There's very little fire activity in the building."

No one else was hurt.
