PLANO (1080 KRLD) - The Plano City Council could vote Monday evening to repeal the city's "Plano Tomorrow" plan.

The city adopted the plan in 2015 after estimates showed Plano's population could grow by up to 300,000 people in the next 20 to 30 years.

A group of residents turned in a petition, asking Plano to put the issue up for a public vote. Residents said the plan would harm the city's "suburban atmosphere" by allowing more large businesses and apartment complexes.

The city secretary declined, saying the issue was not eligible for a referendum vote. The residents sued, and the two sides agreed to mediation.

They announced they had reached an agreement July 10. Plano said the city council would hold a public hearing and vote Monday to keep most of the current plan in place but revert to land-use guidelines adopted in 1986.

Last week, the city says the residents' group backed out of the plan after meeting earlier this month. The residents' lawyer says his clients were dissatisfied with the last meeting. The group says the city council should debate the plan during a meeting and take public input.

Two council members, Anthony Ricciardelli and Rick Smith, asked for the repeal of "Plano Tomorrow" to be added to Monday evening's agenda. The residents' lawyer says repealing "Plano Tomorrow" would make the lawsuit unnecessary.
