A Georgia man who picked up $30 dropped by another shopper at a Walmart has returned the money, ending a case that drew widespread attention after police asked the public for help identifying him.
According to the Albany Police Department, the incident occurred at the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 2586 N. Slappey Blvd. in Albany. A shopper dropped $30 while inside the store. Another individual picked up the cash and left without turning it in to store employees.
On Aug. 18, the department posted a surveillance photo on Facebook and asked for the public’s assistance in identifying the man. The post quickly circulated online and prompted mixed reactions, with some questioning whether police resources should be used for a $30 case.
Georgia law treats taking control of property known to belong to someone else as potential theft if the finder does not take reasonable steps to return it. The statute does not create an automatic exception based on the amount of money involved.
In an update, the Albany Police Department said the man returned the money to the original owner. The victim initially wanted to pursue charges but later decided against it after receiving the cash. No charges will be filed.
The department thanked the public for the attention the post received and confirmed the matter is closed.
