CEDAR HILL (1080 KRLD) - A police chase that started in Grand Prairie Thursday night ended with an officer shooting and killing the suspect in Cedar Hill.
Grand Prairie police say the driver sped off when an officer tried to make a traffic stop just before 11 p.m.
"The vehicle immediately took off. At this point, we don't know why he took off," says the Grand Prairie Police Department's Chelsea Kretz. "We know the car is not stolen. It reports back to a home in Grand Prairie."
Kretz says the driver came to an "abrupt stop" in Cedar Hill, at Highway 67 and Belt Line. She says the driver then displayed a gun in a threatening manner.
"Our officers feared for their lives, and one of our Grand Prairie police officers fired a gun at the suspect," she says.
The suspect died at the scene. Belt Line and the frontage road for Highway 67 were closed for several hours Friday morning while police investigated.
Police from Grand Prairie, Cedar Hill and the Dallas County Sheriff's Office all responded, gathering evidence before the medical examiner removed the suspect.
"The physical evidence section is taking photographs and video of everything," says the Dallas County Sheriff's Department's Raul Reyna. "Some of our detectives will be talking to the officers who were involved."
No officers were hurt and no one else was in the car.
