LAKE HIGHLANDS (KRLD) - Lake Highlands residents don't appear to be too happy about a plan to bring homeless housing to the area.

A new proposal would build about 100 units on a city-owned site on Greenville Avenue just south of 635.

But some residents say its already a high crime area, and doing this would exacerbate the problem.

"If you back this plan, you will see many good families leave the area, which would be bad for the city and bad for the community," one man told the city council.

Councilman Adam McGough questioned putting all of the new units at the Greenville Avenue site.

"We need more affordable housing. We just need to be smart about how we do it and where we put it," he said. "And you don't put it in a place that already has a high concentration of housing."

Developers have until Thursday to submit final proposals for city-owned sites, including two smaller ones on Haskell Avenue. They say nothing is set in stone.
