Diane Guidry says, "My executive chef came to me and said I think we need to give something back by donating a dish to the federal workers not getting paid during the government shutdown." She says federal employees have to show their ID badges to get the free special. She says it's one meal a day per person.
Guidry says,"This has triggered the community to start contacting us via social media or through texts saying what can I do to help. They are dropping off food. One woman dropped off 1,200 hamburger patties. That's what my husband is barbecuing this weekend. So, we're going to barbecue burgers with chips and sodas. My niece is going to make sugar cookies and chocolate chip cookies. We are going to try to feed the entire families of these federal workers every Saturday with the help of the community."
She says, "The community in Port Arthur is very close knit. They love on you if they see someone is in need. I'm grateful for that." She says, " I just feel that since my husband and I are blessed that we can still provide for our family. We should be able to help provide for others. I would prayerfully want someone to do the same if we needed a hot meal or needed things to take care of our kids. So, that's the least we could do. Open the doors to the restaurant and say here come in and have a meal on us."
