Stores across Texas will host a sales tax holiday this weekend for items people might need in an emergency.
The Texas Comptroller is hosting a "sales tax weekend" Saturday through Monday.
"While we can’t know in advance when the next flood, tornado or hurricane may strike, we can make sure our families, homes and businesses have the supplies they need to face these and other emergencies,” Glenn Hegar wrote in a statement. “This tax holiday can help Texans save money while stocking up for emergency situations. Don’t wait for disaster to strike. Take the time now to get prepared.”
The state legislature approved a sales tax holiday for emergency items in 2015. Hegar estimates shoppers will save $1.6 million this weekend.
The tax holiday includes items like batteries, flashflights and first aid kits. Axes, non-electric can openers portable radios are also tax free.
There is no limit on items people can buy, but the exemption only applies to flashlights, fuel containers and batteries priced below $75.
Emergency ladders and hurricane shutters must be less than $300. The exemption does not apply to stepladders.
Portable generators are tax free up to $3,000.
