It's not a cure for COVID-19, but there are signs it may be effective in helping patients who are infected with the virus.

Two North Texas hospitals were expecting their allocations of the much-hyped medication remdesivir to arrive on Wednesday.  Parkland Hospital in Dallas and John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth were each scheduled to receive one case of the drug.

Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council President & CEO Stephen Love told KRLD that federal health officials decided how much of the Gilead drug is going to each state.  Texas health officials were tasked with deciding which hospitals would receive it.

Love said 15 hospitals across the state are getting a portion of the initial remdesivir shipment.  The 30 cases of the drug reserved for Texas will be enough to treat 120 patients.

As for the possibility of additional shipments, Love talked about that, and other coronavirus-related hospital matters with KRLD's Chris Sommer.
