As the bright stage lights of the historic Texas Theatre warm up for Dusty Slay's upcoming "Night Shift" tour, the comedian has comedy-goers declaring, "We're having a good time!"
Dusty Slay is ready to welcome the crowd for two scheduled performances on the evening of May 18th, which also happens to coincide with his birthday.
"I love coming to Dallas," Slay exclaimed, sharing his excitement over returning to the city and the shift from comedy clubs to theaters. He's played many times at the iconic Addison Improv.
So is there more pressure performing at bigger venues?
"I don't think so," Slay quips. "It's weird to say theaters are back to my roots."
His initial days on the comedy scene were in Charleston, South Carolina, where large old theaters were the norm for him. Not that he sold them out then. But he is now.
One of the bits Slay is most well known for is his humorous take on classic country songs.
"I can't stop doing it," says Slay of his habit to dissect country lyrics.
Although, in his most famous breakdown, which is of the Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett tune "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere," Slay takes exception with the line "It's only half past 12, but I don't care...It's five o'clock somewhere."
"And I'm like, well, that's not true. You know? It may be 5:30 somewhere, but we don't lose a half hour just because you change time zones. Well, now I realized, after about 200 comments, I realized that Newfoundland, Canada actually does have a half hour time zone," Slay laughed.
Following the tradition of tying personal history to the stage, Slay named his Netflix special, "Workin' Man," something he admits confuses his own father. Through his stand-up, Slay explores much of his former worklife, joking about the realities of service jobs and the restaurants that still linger in memory.
Comedy is found in the most unexpected places, even within the pages of children's literature.
"I can't just enjoy myself reading a children's book now," mused Slay. He humorously questions the logic of stories, "like Humpty Dumpty – if he's so fragile, why let him sit up on the wall?
"And then all of a sudden here come the horses, and they're like, 'Oh we'll help.' And then now we're like, oh, we got a lot more pieces."
You can catch Dusty Slay at the Texas Theatre in Dallas on Saturday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Find information about tickets here.
