From the addition of new productions and a unique studio space to the challenges faced by theater companies in 2023, there's a lot on Andy Baldwin's mind heading into the 30th season for Lyric Stage.
"The challenge of producing theater, at this scale is finding the right, broadway level talent locally," Baldwin, the artistic director at Lyric Stage says. "And, you know, a lot of people don't know that it actually exists in Dallas. There's so much talent in this area, not just artists or singers, but orchestra players, costume designers and set designers."
And Lyric's six show season is going to give that local talent a chance to shine.
This season, in addition to four large-scale musicals showing at the Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas, Lyric will have two shows at their new Lyric Stage Studio space in the Design District.
"Maybe an audience that doesn't get out and see big musicals...we're gonna bring a more environmental style of shows, maybe a little more modern feel to the shows, to try to bring in a new audience, and get them passionate about the things that we're passionate about," Baldwin says.
"The Great American Trailer Park Musical" kicks off Lyric's studio space production lineup. Described as a hilarious, no-brainer comedy, this trashy bluesy country rock musical promises to be a laugh riot and a trashy good time. The show will play weekends from September 8-October 7.
The production will also incorporate food elements, with grill-outs and trailer park-inspired fare, elevating the experience for the audience.
On the Majestic stage, Lyric starts with the timeless romantic tale of "Cinderella," brought to life with a cast of over 30 and a grand orchestra. Cinderella plays August 24-27.
Other productions in the lineup for the 2023-24 season include "Little Shop of Horrors," "The Producers," and "Guys and Dolls."
Lyric will also delve into the classics with a modern twist by staging the iconic "Sweeney Todd" at the new Lyric Stage Studio space March 15 - April 20, 2024.
