DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- While the Dallas Sports Commission has unveiled its logo for its bid to host matches during the 2026 World Cup, FC Dallas is hoping to build on success from last season.
FC Dallas reached the Western Conference Semifinals last year and is currently in third place in the conference. The club is averaging 18,932 fans per match, up from 17,469 last year.
"We've been fighting for this a long time and growing the game," says President Dan Hunt. "People say it hasn't arrived. It's more than arrived. It's here to stay."
Hunt says North Texas' growing population and growing reputation as an international destination contribute to the club's following. He says FC Dallas has already had more sell-outs than any other season.
"We're seeing unprecedented success at FC Dallas," he says. "We're only part-way through the season. I just think you're seeing so much energy around the game."
FC Dallas hosts the Houston Dynamo Saturday at Toyota Stadium. Only standing room tickets were available Friday afternoon.
Hunt credits North Texas' population growth and international reputation for much of the increase, but he also says MLS has become a more established league that is drawing interest from some of the best players from around the world.
"That helps grow the game of soccer and interest," he says. "I just think it all comes together and culminates in something really special and unique. It's just a great moment, and it's going to really take off from here."
Hunt says growth in Collin County and around Toyota Stadium in Frisco have helped the club draw more fans. FC Dallas was a founding member of the MLS as the Dallas Burn in 1996. In 2005, the club moved into Toyota Stadium.
"We knew Frisco was the right city for us with their commitment and continued commitment building the National Soccer Hall of Fame," Hunt says.
FIFA has chosen North America to host the 2026 World Cup. The organization plans to announce host cities later this year.
