J.J. Watt’s future with the Houston Texans appears to be getting even dimmer.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, several sources believe that the Texans will indeed trade the five-time All-Pro defensive end at some point in the offseason.
One source told La Canfora “it’s a wrap,” while an NFL GM said, “he’ll be traded by March, you can bank on it.”
There was some speculation ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline last week that the team would deal Watt. The oft-injured 32-year-old has expressed frustration with the 1-6 Houston Texans and desires to win a championship before he retires.
Watt has said that his goal is to still bring a championship to Houston, while quarterback Deshaun Watson also does not want to rebuild, either. However, the Texans may choose to go in another direction once they hire a new head coach and GM.
One source told La Canora he does not think owner Cal McNair will want to hold Watt back.
“I think everyone in their hearsts already knows he is going to be moving on,” the source said. “He’s done everything they could have ever asked for, and this chapter is closing.”
Watt, when healthy, is still one of the most fearsome pass rushers in the game. He entered Sunday with three sacks, a forced fumble and three passes defended.
Injuries have disrupted his career, though. He played just eight games last season and eight games total between 2016 and 2017 seasons. He managed to stay fully healthy in 2018, though, which was also his most recent All-Pro and Pro Bowl season, recording 16 sacks and forcing a league-high seven fumbles.
