DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Coming off of one of the worst seasons in franchise history on the defensive side of the ball, the Dallas Cowboys are in desperate need of personnel improvements at every level of the unit.
One of the team's biggest issues on that front was the play of linebacker group, and in particular, fourth-year linebacker Jaylon Smith.
An easy rumored solution to that issue for Dallas was the idea of releasing or restructuring current players on the roster and rebuilding that area of the defense using a combination of the NFL Draft, and the added cap space resulting from those transactions.
However, according to a report from the Fort Worth Star Telegram's Clarence Hill on Wednesday, the Cowboys are not considering that avenue Smith, who has been much-maligned by the Dallas fan base over the past few seasons.
This report was later independently confirmed through two separate sources by 105.3 the Fan's Bryan Broaddus on the GBAG Nation earlier today.
Smith, who finished third in the NFL in tackles in 2020 with 154 total stops, as well as five tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries, will have his contract fully guaranteed on March 21st.
However, according to the report, the Cowboys can create $7.2 million in cap space should they release Smith, and designate him as a post-June 1 cut.
