The owners of Rodeo Dallas, a nightclub in Deep Ellum, were locked out of their business this week after the landlord cited tenant “defaults” and concerns raised by city officials.
A chain and padlock now secure the club’s entrance at Elm and Crowdus streets, and a letter taped to the door states the landlord has repossessed the space and changed the locks.
The action comes one week after a letter from the Dallas City Attorney’s Office cited a series of incidents at the club, including 16 alleged criminal offenses such as disorderly conduct, drug possession and a homicide. The city also reported at least 12 code violations during a July 11 inspection.
Nearby businesses continued operating Tuesday. Dan Murry, co-owner of The Armoury D.E., said Rodeo Dallas' closure reflects the responsibilities nightlife establishments have to their communities.
“As a bar, you have a responsibility to the community that you’re in and to your patrons to make sure that you’re doing the right thing,” Murry said.
