A subway could soon become a reality for the city of Dallas

DALLAS (1080 KRLD)- The Dallas City Council unanimously approved a resolution clearing the way for a proposed downtown DART subway.

The project known as "D-2" would put a second rail transit route through downtown to relieve congestion.

The projected cost is $1.7 billion, but DART is trying to get $800 million in federal grants.

DART has already spent $15 million on part of the design just to be eligible for this federal construction money.

Activists have been trying for years to remove I-345 and its elevated freeway that separates downtown from Deep Ellum.

Previously, council members voiced concern that spending all this money would leave DART unable to keep up the bus system people need in southern Dallas.

The council will hear from DART again on the project in several months.
