Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is launching a dual push on public education this week, targeting classroom academic performance before turning his focus to campus security.

Abbott announced the creation of the Texas Classroom Commission, a panel of more than 20 former public school educators tasked with raising the state's national academic standing. According to the governor's office, the commission's immediate focus will be boosting student proficiency in foundational subjects, starting with math and reading.

Following the academic announcement, Abbott travels to Lubbock on Tuesday afternoon to address school safety.

The governor is scheduled to meet with local superintendents and law enforcement officials to roll out a new statewide campus safety initiative. Details of the security proposal have not yet been released.
