The Fort Worth-based airline blames bad weather which began last week with ferocious winds at DFW Airport which closed runways. Those cancellations cascaded as flight crews found themselves out of position and up against federal limits on hours worked and mandatory rest between shifts.

About a thousand of the nationwide cancellations were Sunday alone, and about 200 of those were at DFW Airport. According to FllightAware.com another 300 American flights have been canceled or delayed since midnight.

Many people on social media suggested the staffing shortages were related to pending federal vaccination mandates but American Airlines insists that has nothing to do with it. But some industry analysts believe the airlines bear some responsibility because they all over-schedule so there is no margin for error when outside issues crop up.

AA is hoping the return of more than a thousand employees off leave will help unravel the backup this coming week.
