American Airlines is overhauling its rewards policy for its cheapest tickets, cutting off mileage and loyalty point earnings for some travelers.
The airline announced that customers who purchase basic economy fares will no longer earn AAdvantage miles or loyalty points. The change, which took effect Wednesday, marks a major shift for American’s lowest-priced tickets.
“We routinely evaluate our fare products to remain competitive in the marketplace. Customers who purchase a Basic Economy ticket on Dec. 17, 2025, and beyond will not earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points towards AAdvantage status,” it said. “Basic Economy customers will continue to receive one free personal item and one free carry-on bag, free snacks, soft drinks and in-flight entertainment.”
Under the new policy, travelers who want to earn miles or loyalty points will need to book a higher fare class, moving beyond basic economy to continue accumulating AAdvantage rewards.
