Animal shelters across North Texas are full, some beyond capacity, and they are asking for help before hard choices have to be made.
Animal shelters usually fill up during the summer, sometimes it's because more pets are outside and some of them run away but it's also because many pet owners have not spayed or neutered their animals resulting in more unwanted pets.
Dallas Animal services says they are currently at 130% capacity. And in Fort Worth, combined shelters are just about at 100% full.
In Kaufman County the shelters are so full no more dogs are being taken in, for now.
Many shelters are urging people to consider adopting a pet before some of them have to be euthanized. And shelters are offering help.
The Kaufman County Pet Adoption Center is currently offering free adoptions for all large dogs. Adoption fees are also being waived for most pets in Dallas and Fort Worth, and the shelters are also offering help to pay for food and vet visits.
For details on pet adoptions, please contact your local pet shelters.
