The Fifth US Circuit Court of Appeals has reversed an order blocking the Texas immigration law SB4. It would allow police in Texas to arrest those suspected of crossing the border illegally.
Last week, a federal judge blocked the Texas law that would give police broad powers to arrest migrants suspected of illegally entering the U.S.
U.S. District Judge David Ezra's preliminary injunction paused the law that was set to take effect on March 5, just as President Joe Biden and Donald Trump made visits to the Texas border.
The court paused its order for a week, to give the federal government time to appeal to the US Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court doesn't intervene, the law could take effect on Saturday.
“Texas has the right to defend itself because of President Biden’s ongoing failure to fulfill his duty to protect our state from the invasion at our southern border," Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a social media post, noting that he believes the case will ultimately end up before the US Supreme Court.
