The NTT INDYCAR series is preparing its track for the inaugural Java House Grand Prix of Arlington. The street course will run 2.7 miles along streets and through parking lots in Arlington's Entertainment District.
The course runs west on Randol Mill, through part of the AT&T Stadium parking lot, then back east on Randol Mill, south on Stadium Drive and north through a parking lot between the stadium and Globe Life Field. Pit lane and the start-finish line are in that lot.
"One of the great features is in Lot 10, an area we call the 'horseshoe,'" says Grand Prix of Arlington President and General Manager Bill Miller. "It's going to be one of the more technical parts of the track. The cars will come in off Randol Mill and go around this carousel which really sets up as an ampitheater."
Miller says INDYCAR spent 18 months working with the City of Arlington, the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers on the layout of the track and infrastructure.
"I think the roads are pretty darn good here," he says. "For a racing circuit, they have wide streets which provide great flexibility defining a track. Really, the infrastructure improvements we had to make were more cosmetic, pulling medians back with stamp concrete versus curbs. We repaired one intersection at Randol Mill and AT&T (Way) to give it a slight grade so cars don't bottom out through that. We did some minor diamond grinding, which is just taking out some imperfections on the road, but it's been pretty minor."
The race will have 70 laps on the course. Miller says drivers will start arriving Friday to take their first looks at the course, but teams have already been preparing their cars for the track.
"They don't have high speed bank ovals, but the cars are set up to ride on rails," he says. "The suspensions are set up to absorb minor imperfections on the circuit, but that's what makes it challenging."
While work continues, fencing now covers the median on Randol Mill to separate the two directions of the track. Grandstands are now being set up in parking lots. Miller says INDYCAR will have events spread across 36 acres in the Entertainment District.
"We will have 60-plus different companies activating displays and interactive, immersive environments, whether it's simulators or games for kids," he says. "Basically, the entire Entertainment District becomes the venue, and that's exciting."
