ARLINGTON (1080 KRLD)- After hosting the World Series last year, the Texas Rangers are now preparing to host the 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. The game will take place at Globe Life Field July 16.
Events around All-Star Week will start the Friday before with the HBCU Swingman Classic, followed by the Futures Game and Celebrity Softball Game Saturday. The MLB Draft will start Sunday at Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth.
Workouts and then the Home Run Derby are scheduled Monday July 15.
"Suffice it to say, it's a tremendous honor on behalf of the Texas Rangers organization to be able to host the Major League Baseball All-Star Game," says Executive Vice President Rob Matwick.
All-Star Village will set up across Randol Mill at Choctaw Stadium. Matwick says this is the first time the village will occupy a stadium that had previously hosted the All-Star Game.
"We're excited for fans of all ages to come and experience the All-Star Village," he says. "This event has grown so much over the years."
The Rangers last hosted the All-Star Game in 1995.
The Rangers say events will cover 650,000 square feet of space at Globe Life Field, Choctaw Stadium, Esports Arena and the plaza outside the ballpark.
Arlington Police have been preparing for crowds. Deputy Chief Leo Daniels says the department sent staff to Seattle to watch their police department during the 2023 All-Star Game.
"Our mission is the same every time we have a major event here, and that is for everyone to have a fantastic time in the Entertainment District as well as leave safely," he says.
Daniels says the 2023 World Series helped them and the Rangers plan for the All-Star Game.
"Inside the venues, like we always have, we will have officers strategically placed for safety," he says. "We will have officers working with Public Works and Rangers staff outside."
For the week around the game, Daniels says people who often drive in the Entertainment District will need to make changes. He urges people to use the Waze app for an updated list of road closures.
Rideshare services will have a designated area near Lot C. Police and the Rangers urge fans to stay on sidewalks or in designated crosswalks. Daniels says people should expect to see officers working traffic control.
