Over 250 mayors from across the United States have convened this week in Washington D.C. at the 2024 United States Conference of Mayors to engage in discussions addressing an array of urban challenges. They're exchanging ideas and best practices in public safety, mental health, infrastructure, housing, homelessness and more.

Arlington mayor Jim Ross is one of many Texas mayors participating.

"It's an opportunity for us to come together, see the best practices from around the country and other cities, what's working, what's not working, addressing critical issues for every city," Ross said. "That includes crime, homelessness, economic development, job creation, you name it, we're talking about it."

Ross said he's excited to learn from other leaders about strategies to attract quality jobs to their communities.

One of Mayor Ross' passions is veterans' issues, given his background as a Marine Corps veteran. He serves as the chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Veteran Affairs Task Force.

"We're neck deep in taking care of veterans' issues. I think we can help a lot of communities around the country with some of the ideas that we have in Arlington on how to take care of veterans," he said.

Ross also is excited to share insights into Arlington's entertainment district and its significance in the city's growth and development.

"I'm happy to come and share about our partnerships and how we continue to grow and nurture those relationships and how important that is to our community," Ross said.

The conference runs January 17 through January 19.
